Discover Daddy D's Southern Style Bbq

If you’re driving through Woodland, Washington, and catch the smell of slow-smoked meat in the air, chances are you’re close to Daddy D's Southern Style Bbq at 1243 N Goerig St, Woodland, WA 98674, United States. I stopped in on a rainy afternoon during a road trip along I-5, not expecting much more than a quick lunch. Instead, I found a barbecue joint that takes its craft seriously, from the smoker out back to the sauce on the table.

The first thing that stands out is the aroma. Real Southern barbecue isn’t rushed, and you can taste that here. According to the National Barbecue Association, authentic low-and-slow smoking can take anywhere from 8 to 16 hours depending on the cut. When I asked about their brisket, the staff explained their process in detail: seasoned with a dry rub, rested overnight, then smoked for over 12 hours until it hits that sweet spot where the collagen breaks down and the meat turns tender without falling apart. That’s not just cooking; that’s patience and technique.

I ordered a classic brisket plate with baked beans and coleslaw, plus a side of cornbread. The brisket had that signature smoke ring-pink, juicy, and slightly peppery on the bark. If you’ve read any reviews from pitmasters like Aaron Franklin or followed guidance from the Texas A&M Meat Science program, you’ll know the smoke ring isn’t just for looks; it’s a sign of proper combustion and smoke penetration. Here, it wasn’t overdone or dry. Each slice held together but pulled apart easily, which is exactly what you want.

The menu covers all the Southern staples: pulled pork, ribs, smoked chicken, and sausage links. For families, there are combo platters that make sharing easy, and the portions are generous without feeling excessive. I noticed several locals ordering takeout, which usually says a lot about consistency. One couple at the next table told me they drive in from a neighboring town every other week just for the ribs. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident.

What impressed me most was the balance of flavors. Good barbecue isn’t just about smoke; it’s about harmony. The house-made sauces ranged from sweet and tangy to bold and spicy. Instead of drowning the meat, they complement it. Research from the University of Georgia’s food science department highlights how acidity in sauces enhances perceived tenderness and flavor complexity. You can taste that interplay here, especially with the pulled pork, where a splash of vinegar-based sauce brightens the richness.

The sides deserve attention too. The baked beans had bits of smoked meat folded in, adding depth rather than just sweetness. The coleslaw was crisp and fresh, cutting through the heavier dishes. Even the cornbread struck a nice balance between savory and slightly sweet. These details matter. In many diners, sides feel like an afterthought. Here, they round out the experience.

The setting itself is casual and welcoming. It feels like a true neighborhood diner-wooden tables, friendly chatter, and the steady hum of regulars picking up their usual orders. The staff are quick to offer recommendations, and they clearly know the menu inside out. When I asked about their most popular item, the answer came without hesitation: brisket and ribs. Judging by the steady stream of orders, that checks out.

Online reviews consistently mention the generous portions and authentic flavor, and from my experience, that praise is well-earned. While I can’t verify every detail of their sourcing, the quality suggests fresh ingredients and careful preparation. If there’s any limitation, it’s that peak hours can get busy, so calling ahead for takeout might save you some time.

Barbecue is deeply rooted in Southern culinary tradition, built on technique, time, and respect for ingredients. Daddy D's Southern Style Bbq brings that tradition to Woodland with confidence and heart. Whether you’re a smoked meat purist or just craving a hearty plate with all the fixings, this spot delivers the kind of meal that sticks with you long after the last bite.

  • The bomb! Tender collards, perfectly cooked chicken, flavorful hush puppies, and THE SAUCE! Also as good as the food were the nice, friendly folks running the place. They sell out a lot, but it’s worth the wait!

  • Great customer service. Had the Sherminator with a side of collard greens. Sandwich was packed high with pulled pork, spicy sausage and slaw. I'll be back.

  • Happy to have a tasty restaurant option in our tiny Woodland town. Love the Memphis sweet BBQ sauce. Brisket was great. Cornbread was a corner piece for $6 that felt like it sat out overnight. Super dry and wouldn’t get again. Baked beans was PACKED with bone bits so eat with caution. Great flavor and loved the chunks of brisket in it but yikes! Mac and cheese was KFC quality level and not much flavor which is a pass for me and I love Mac and cheese. This one isn’t it. Would come back just for meat in future. We spent $44 for one meal. They sell out fast. This is the first time we’ve been successful getting food as they close once they sell out. We’d come back and pass on sides. Does look like they have picnic tables out back for summer. There is space for dining inside. We had take out.

  • The food was delicious! The owner was an absolute gentleman, even went so far as to explain the menu and talk with us about what they used for their catfish breading. The restaurant was definitely more intimate than I'm used to but I'll bet when it's hopping in there it feels like a party. I highly recommend the catfish, buttery smooth with a crunchy outside. The hush puppies are to DIE for! Overall amazing service and I'll be sure to come back with family!

  • Okay so today we stopped in and had some BBQ. Now we travel all over the country and this has been the best BBQ that We have had in over 15 years. No joke this place is great. The owner himself we met in the morning as he was out back working on his very Large grill as you will see in the photos. Donnie was so nice and kind. He actually does a lot of charity work in the area as well. Just a great man that cooks some really good food. So my wife had the pulled Brisket Sandwich and well let’s just say this is stacked high and is very filling. Covered in his own homemade BBQ sauce. And yes it is homemade. I had the 3 meat combo with ribs, pulled pork and brisket. With a side of baked beans and Mac & Cheese. All again homemade everything here is homemade . This all was very good . We will be in town for a few days we will be going back. If you are ever in town stop and eat here

  • What a treat!! It's absolutely the best BBQ we've ever had!! Go for the Brisket and stay for the pie! Make sure to pick yourself up some seasonings while you're there. The BBQ sause itself is in its own right. Homestyle Southern bbq at its finest!! Prices are very reasonable. Great conversation & service with the family that owns it. Thank you, Daddy D, for your time today. We enjoyed hearing a little about your family, family history, and your beautiful community. Love from your newest SoCal friends, Ray & Krysti.
